Struggles of Depression
Some wonder what it’s like to have depression, and if they could possibly have depression, and/or how it could affect their grades, if you’re look for those answers, or possibly just curious about depression, look no further than this article.
Studies show that the average teen depression rate Maine is; 9.2% as of 2017. The stress for teens with depression usually varies. It’s difficult to tell the stress rate, and sometimes, it’s extremely high, sometimes, teens with depression, have absolutely no stress. If teens are stressed or overwhelmed on the daily, this could lead to drugs and alcohol, if not those, sometimes self harming can come in along with the stress. If this is the case, some teens will hide it for years from their parents, or they’ll simply tell their parents because they want help and want to be able to be happy.
Let’s start with how stress can overwhelm a teen.
Any type of stress is overwhelming, though if teens are going home every night with loads of homework, they could feel upset, because sometimes all they can do is homework, study, and try to fit in some sleep in between, this could feel like their lives are being ruined, or they could be bullied, and think they’re imperfect, this stress could lead to anxiety, feeling like they have to do everything perfectly, in order to not be bullied, and to make everyone else happy with how they look, smell, talk, walk, everything in the books. If, though, none of those occur, the only other bad stress that could really mess with a teen, is stress at home, some of the stress teens could be feeling at home are, feeling like they just simply are unwanted, or unwelcome in their own home, or they could be being abused physically, being hit or punched for doing something they shouldn’t be doing, mentally, which is where their parents say horrible things to their children, and making them think they’re child is a horrible person, then, finally, there's verbally abused, where the parents swear at them, yell at them, and just downright make them feel hated with their words and actions towards the teen, all of these stress factors for teens could lead to self harming, drugs or alcohol, and possibly a fatal suicide if the depression isn’t caught early.
There are also signs of depression and/or possible self harming;
The one, obvious sign of depression is the teen being sad 24/7, and not being able to feel happy, though if you have a friend that smiles all the time, but even wears long sleeves in any weather, there could be a serious situation going on that you should try to be aware about, which brings me to the next factor of possible self harming; wearing long sleeves in any weather, or wearing pants, sweat pants, or any type of clothing that covers the legs or arms, this could mean that even if you don’t suspect that anything’s going on, you should check in with them just to make sure, because there could be something going on about that they’re nervous to tell you. Though, there’s no limits to where self harming could occur on the body, the most common self harmed parts of the body are the thighs, stomach, or forearms. The common excuse for having self harm marks out in the open for self harmers are “oh, it was my cat, I was playing with him and he got me good.” Most of the time, that’s not true, cats don’t usually make large marks across the arm over and over, or making multiple perfect lines, there’s a large amount of times where the cat isn’t the one making the marks across the arm, cats usually make small cuts upon any part of your body, not large gashes, or perfectly straight lines.
