Mr. Drinkwater and The Weight Room

When Mr. Drinkwater was in 6th grade, his parents gave him and his brother a weight set. His older brother was in high school at the time. Mr. Drinkwater’s brother and his brother’s friends frequently used the new weight set. After a while of watching his older sibling using the weights, Mr. Drinkwater was intrigued. He slowly started copying what his older brother was doing, and ever since then, the gym teacher enjoys getting the time to use weights.

By continuing to use weights, Mr. Drinkwater got results through middle school. The high school that he went to also had a weight room, so Mr. Drinkwater got the chance to pursue using weights through school. Lifting helped him to strengthen his muscles and become a better sports player. He got a lot stronger and better as an athletic competitor. By having an educated adult to show him how to use the materials in the weight room, Mr. Drinkwater learned a lot of new things from his high school gym teacher that has helped him to become a better gym teacher.

In college, Mr. Drinkwater got even more serious about using weights. He attended the University of Maine at Presque Isle, or also known as UMPI, and he later joined the UMPI Iron Club at age 18. He was in the club for a whole year, and there he lifted even bigger weights than his previous years of doing so. The people in the group (including Mr. Drinkwater) competed all over Aroostook county.

Eventually, Mr. Drinkwater stopped lifting weights because he was too muscle bound. It was affecting his other sports like soccer as well. Now, he concentrates on body weight and focuses on making sure he’s not that muscle bound like in college because he didn’t like it that much. The gym teacher has been teaching for 21 years now.

Overall, Mr. Drinkwater does continue to use the weight room at school sometimes. During the weight room unit that he teaches, he likes to work out with the kids. When he came to Bonny Eagle, he was psyched they had a weight room. It is actually one of his favorite units, and his favorite weight room exercise is the bicep curl and pull ups, which is an upper body workout. He loves to teach kids how to use weights and lift because it is a lifelong skill. He loves to educate and mold young minds into a healthy lifestyle. Being a gym teacher gives him the chance to introduce fun activities and games to kids all around the middle school. Mr. Drinkwater also loves to get challenged by kids, too!
