These were the contestants from the Spelling Bee

This year both the Spelling Bee and Geography Bee took place on Wednesday, January 18, 2017. The Spelling Bee was at 11:30 and the Geography Bee was in the morning after homerooms.

The 6th graders participating in the Spelling Bee were Justin Anderson, Kaitlyn Bartash, Brandon Graves, Emily Jones, Lauren Manson, Fiona McCleary, and Madyson Quimby. The 7th graders who competed in the Spelling Bee were Julian Bicknell, Macey Cabral, Jesse Hannaford, Zachary Neptune, Parker Paul, Audrey Ricker, Vaida Smith, and Charles Tilburg. And finally the 8th graders who partook in the event were Brian Bellonzi, Abigail Carson, Lauren Esty, Amber Hart, Tugg Marles, Christopher Rankin, and Marlee Walker.

This year for the Geography Bee the 6th graders who participated were Nicholas Freeman, Jordan Hanson, Chaeli Higham, Braydon Peterson, Isabella Sanchez, and Joseph Velserline. The 7th graders were Jack Deptula, Hayley Jordan, Lydia Niedermeyer, Jack Sellck, Veronica Shore, and Mackay Winling, and the 8th graders were Emily Bartash, Carter Gagnon, Andrew Iverson, Mia Kovacs, Elias LeBlanc, Alanah Tuohey, Marlee Walker, and Ryan Mullen.

The Geography Bee was 9 rounds and took 2 hours to complete. The rounds were split up into 7 preliminary rounds, 1 final round, and 1 championship round. The winner was Carter Gagnon from 8th grade and the runner up was Jace Sellick. Carter Gagnon answered 17 questions out of 21 correctly. He will be participating in the next competition. The next round will be at the University of Farmington Maine in Augusta. It will be held on March 31st and a 6th grade teacher, Mr. Lambert, will be judging.

The Spelling Bee was a total of 15 rounds and 23 students participated. It lasted 75 minutes. The Spelling Bee is not only spelling, it is also vocabulary. During the rounds everyone got their own word to spell. In the last round the contestant must spell a extra word correctly in order to be the champion (Ms. Atkinson calls it a “proof” word). This year’s final word was acrobat. The winner was 8th grader Marlee Walker in Carnegie clan. Like the Geography Bee, the winner and runner up will compete at the county level.

Good luck to everyone from BEMS who is participating in the county level. Below is the link to the Spelling Bee. The Geography Bee was never recorded.
