Christmas and New Year

Happy New Year!

2016 is almost over and 2017 is coming fast, but what do people do to celebrate the New Year? On New Year's Eve most people stay up till midnight and watch the ball drop on tv. Mrs. Abbott does in fact stay up till midnight and watch the ball drop and she also bangs pots and pans with family and friends to wake up wild life and neighbors. Mrs. Montgomery’s daughters are now adults so she says she does not do anything special but when her kids were young they would invite their friends over and go tubing. They would also eat hot fudge sundaes at midnight. It is also good luck to wear yellow to bring in the New Year. Did you know that?

This year Emily Osterrieder has gotten two fours in school for Trimester 1. In 2017 she wants to get all threes. In 2017 Mrs. Montgomery would like to keep up her good health habits, work hard at helping students acquire appropriate math skills to build strong math foundations, and she wants to spend more time with her family. Mrs. Montgomery wants all of the kids in her Advisory class to feel welcomed at Bonny Eagle and to have them change their lives in a positive way. Mrs. Abbott would like to learn a new piece of music on her violin. Mrs. Abbott also hopes her students continue to enjoy learning Spanish.

In America most people celebrate Christmas by putting up a tree and opening presents on Christmas morning, but in Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries it is a little bit different. In these countries the people light fireworks on Christmas and the New Year. In Mexico the people celebrate Las Posadas. Las Posadas is a nine day celebration before Christmas. The celebration represents Mary and Joseph’s journey. One way people celebrate this is by placing baby Jesus in the Nativity set on midnight on Christmas. Most of the celebrations continue through January 6th, which means that most students do not go back to school until after the 6th of January.

Christmas and New Years are both times to celebrate. Many people have different traditions and celebrations. I hope everyone had a great Christmas and I also hope everyone has a good year!
